Let us pause to remember our Fallen Hero, Lieutenant Roger P. Fleming, lost this day in 1992 during a high speed pursuit in Baker Sector.

Lt. Fleming was born on May 15, 1956 in Laurel, Maryland. He joined the Prince George’s County Police Department on October 6, 1974 as a cadet and subsequently entered the sworn ranks of the Agency. Lt. Fleming was later promoted to the rank of sergeant and assigned to the Hyattsville Station.

Shortly after midnight on the morning of October 27, 1992, Lt. Fleming initiated a traffic stop of a vehicle on Kenilworth Ave. near Westchester Park Dr. in College Park, MD. The vehicle fled the scene and the lieutenant gave chase. As the pursuit proceeded southbound on the Baltimore/Washington Parkway, the operator of the suspect vehicle suddenly executed a U-turn onto the northbound side of the Baltimore/Washington Parkway just prior to the Washington, D.C. border. Lt. Fleming attempted to do the same, at which point his police vehicle struck a curb, causing him to lose control. The police vehicle then struck a tree. Lt. Fleming suffered fatal injuries in the single vehicle collision and was pronounced deceased at 0034 hours.

Lt. Fleming served the Prince George’s County Police Department for 18 years and was the 19th member of this Agency to make the Ultimate Sacrifice.

At the time of his death, Lieutenant Roger P. Fleming was 36 years old and survived by his wife and two daughters, ages six years and 11 months.
